Writing Workshop
Workshop Title: Superman
Step 1
Say, “Watch the following video about some of the underlying message(s) about the 2025 release of Superman.”
Step 2
Read the poem “Superman” by Claire C. Holland. As your students are reading, ask them to think of how the poem reflects the qualities and beliefs of Superman, as was depicted in the video. When you’re done reading, briefly discuss.
Step 3
Tell your students, “Craft a series of “Superman Believes…” statements, focusing on other beliefs that he may hold, based on your understanding of him. Example: “Superman believes that being human means carrying hope even in pain.” Take a few minutes to brainstorm.”
Step 4
Ask your students to compose a poem similar in sentiment to “Superman” in which they write from the perspective of Clark Kent/Superman. They should use one of their “Superman believes” statements as the basis of the poem.
Step 5
When the students are done, have them share their responses with one another.

Step 1
Open the following document and go through the slides with your students. In short, the lesson asks students to explore the poem “Superman” by Claire C. Holland and identify the text that reflects the values or traits of the two central characters in the film, Lex Luthor and Superman.
- The presentation includes all of the directions, hyperlinks, and examples you will need to walk your students through the lesson. You should also make a copy of this presentation to share with your students as you’re going through the assignment with them.
Step 2
When your students are done, have them share their responses with the rest of the class, particularly the part of the lesson that asks students to recognize how the contrasting values of Lex Luthor and Superman mirror our society today.
Step 3
After your discussion, share the following video with your students.
