Writing Workshop
Workshop Title: Dear Me
Step 1
Ask your students, “What’s some advice you would give to your former self? Why?”
Step 2
Watch Joseph Green’s performance of his poem “Dear Me.” When you’re done, discuss the advice he imparts to his former self. What does he wish he did differently when he was younger? Why?
Step 3
Say, “Write down a list of characteristics that BEST describe your “former” you. Then simply think of the way(s) in which you have changed since then.” Then give your students a few minutes to brainstorm.
Step 4
Have your students compose a poem similar in sentiment to “Dear Me” in which they write a letter to their former selves and offer advice.
Step 5
When the students are done, have them share their responses with one another.

Area of Focus: Various
Step 1
This lesson allows students to analyze various concepts and skills, so it is recommended that you have covered several of the “standalone” lessons before assigning this one.
Step 2
Before you begin the lesson, ask your students to take out a sheet of paper and a pen. You should also provide a copy of the poem.
Step 3
Walk your students through the following presentation. In this lesson, your students will read/listen to Joseph Green’s “Dear Me” and play “Scattergories,” using the rules of the game to come to a deeper understanding of the piece and its craft.
Step 4
Monitor your students as they are playing. Feel free to pause the game and ask whole-class questions between rounds.
