Coat of Many Colors

by Dolly Parton

Writing Workshop

Workshop Title: Coat of Many Colors

Step 1

Say, “What’s something seemingly small or insignificant that you remember fondly? Why does this act, item, person, etc. hold a special place for you?” Take 5-10 minutes to discuss.

Step 2

Listen to “Coat of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton. As you’re listening, just think of the ways in which Parton is able to convey her gratitude toward her mother.

Step 3

Tell your students, “Think about something seemingly “small” or “insignificant” from your past that you look back upon fondly. Then jot down as many things — in as much detail as possible — that you remember about that item, moment, etc.” Then take a few minutes to brainstorm.

Step 4

Ask your students to compose a poem similar in sentiment to “Coat of Many Colors” in which they focus on something “small” or “insignificant” (at least to others) that they look back upon fondly.

Step 5

When the students are done, have them share their responses with one another.

Analytical Lesson

Area of Focus: Various

Step 1

This lesson allows students to analyze various concepts and skills, so it is recommended that you have covered several of the “standalone” lessons before assigning this one.

Step 2

All of the directions and materials for this assignment can be found in the following PRESENTATION.

  • In short, your students will read Dolly Parton’s “Coat of Many Colors” and work in groups to identify specific pieces of text that all contribute to the same idea and/or concept. Students will then be paired with another group’s insights and tasked with trying to determine the reasoning or rationale behind said group’s pairings.
